How big to make root partition to use dnf upgrade on fedora

A long time ago, I tried to do Fedora upgrade on Fedora 23 (I mentioned it was a long time ago, didn't I?) I didn't have sufficient space on my root partition. I tried to do some rearranging by moving /opt to /home/opt but that wasn't enough either. Now, I'm going to install fedora 29 but before I partition, I'd like to know how big to make root partition so I can do dnf upgrade to go to 30 when it's time. TIA

Any reason / needs to be on a small partition in its own? Makes a ton of sense to have a single partition, and the space you need depends on what you do.
