Problems with resetting my Laptop

I have a HP Laptop running with Windows 10 Home edition.
Lately there've been problems like the browser opening randomly without me doing anything, browser crashing or some programs just 'freezing' without any prior signs (in the task manager they are tagged as stopped)
After thinking, what most would in this case, that the laptop got infected with a virus I ran various programs (Norton, adwcleaner, RogueKiller) to remove it (I was unable to execute adwcleaner and Roguekiller at first because they 'freezed' on starting, had to run them after starting in the safe mode) but it changed nothing
With no other way I first tried to reset using the HP Recovery Manager which 'freezed' every time I tried when it was at "preparation 1%"(background was still the desktop). After that I tried the general Windows reset but that aborted after several minutes(background already black; progress at around 33%) that there was an error trying to reset to original settings. Both times I chose the "keep personal data" option.
My first question is whether and how it's possible to reset the laptop while still keeping the personal data option.
If not, is it possible to solve the problem without having to fully reinstall Windows?

The symptoms point to a failing drive much more than anything else. Do your backups ASAP for safety. Then you can try resetting again or reinstall.

How should I reset when it, like stated in my question, gets an error?

Backup your personal files ASAP before anything else. Insisting on the reset may make the problem worse, if it's a failing drive, because it implies a long writing process.

After backing up the files?

After backing up you can do what you want. Not backing up and insisting in intensive tasks can result in data loss. Again, if the problem is a failing drive.
