MS ACCESS Compact on Close behavior for Backend MDB

0

I understand the "Compact on Close" Setting for a standalone Access MDB File.

But, I cannot confirm whether the "Compact on Close" Setting affects a "Back End" MDB file (that is, an MDB "Database" File that is ONLY Linked to by "Front End" MDB).

"Logic" tells me that opening a "Front End", querying or editing data in the linked tables, then closing the Front End should NOT trigger the Backend "Compact on Close" option if it had been set to yes.

I cant think of a way to programatically test this behavior.

Is my "Logic" sound ?

  • The backend DB is being opened by the frontend DB, so if its being closed, I'd assume it very well may compact first if it has been told to.

  • Yes, that is the question. I hope to get some definitive knowledge about it s behavior.

  • Have you tried it?

  • I can't tell if it is doing it or not. I can't think of any way to create a flag or some kind of message when it compacts. I tried watching for temporary files in the folder using file explorer, but that didn't give any indication.

  • Another question is whether you want this to run or not, and if you want it to run, whether you actually need to run it.
