What is broken when a router slows down or times out all requests
I have a D-LINK DIR 601 router that was working fine until recently. Network requests either go really slow or timeout. This happens to both wired and wireless connections. If I bypass the router and plug a desktop directly into my internet connection, requests are fast like they used to be. I'm pretty sure this is a hardware issue as I don't recall any software changes. My question is, what part of the hardware in the router wears out, so it doesn't work anymore?

More than likely it is a dns problem, change the dns address in the router, change it to googles public dns and see if helps...whatsmydns.net/google-dns.html

Can you describe if download / upload speeds are slow, or just the initial connection?

Have you tried disconnecting EVERYTHING from your network except one computer, the router and modem and seeing how the speed is?
