Debian freezes at boot after clean install

Tl;dr

A missing non-free driver is likely making Debian hang at boot right after a fresh install. How can I install it?

I am trying to install Debian 9, but my PC has an Atheros wireless component that requires a proprietary driver. The first time I did this, at the screen on the installer asking for the driver, I skipped it. The installation continued normally through Ethernet but when I tried to boot, it got stuck on this screen:

Output

OK. I didn't even want the driver. I went to the Debian website and downloaded the ISO for the non-free live OS. I booted into it and everything worked as intended and I was greeted by the desktop wallpaper. No nasty error or freeze.

Debian desktop

After that, I tried putting the driver files from the Debian website on a USB drive and inserting it when prompted at install. The installer kept asking if I wanted to insert it even when I have (bug?). I just clicked OK and the install continued normally, but the same problem occurred as described above.

How can I install the driver so I can use Debian?

I am an average user coming from Fedora but I have used Ubuntu and Mint.

  • IIR there are usually a ton of others who've met the same problem already (forum posts usually abound) and suggest things like blacklisting the offending device, tried that?
