My computer keeps showing a bsod, keeps hanging, auto-restarting, then eventually cannot log in to windows 10...

Actually this has been an issue going on for a year now, but it has not appeared for about 5-6 months until my friend installed BlueStacks, an android emulator. I wouldn't say that was necessarily the cause of it because I've had the problem occur several times previously and it just recurred after he installed it (it could be a coincidence or a trigger).

The symptoms:

1.) I normally play games like Dota 2 and I usually notice some sluggishness in the game where there are very slight lags then shortly after--my computer crashing to something like this (it can just happen out of the blue or when i'm not even touching my computer when I leave it on, but less often):
Hang

The video below is how the actual freeze looks like this was taken 5-6 months ago (normally when the pc crashes on a sound, it will replay the sound loudly over and over until I shut off my computer):
Computer Freeze on my Computer [Actual Footage]

I also noticed that whenever there were times when Dota 2 was lagging due to loading issues due to faulty programming by the developers of Dota 2, the freeze has a higher probability of occurring. This occurs when game is being loaded for example. But when I do not do tasks that require a lot of loading, it's less likely my computer will hang.

2.) After 2-3 days of restarting my computer every time it freezes there will occasional times where there would be this blue screen of death:
BSOD1

In this case, it was rdyboot.sys, but there are times where there would be no error such as this:
BSOD2

3.) There will also be occasional restarts on my computer. It is more of a hard reset similar to pressing the reset button, but it occurs less than the screen shattering and freezing.

4.) When I reset, most of the instances require me to keep resetting the computer over and over because my keyboard would have these 3 lights and my computer will not boot successfully and just display a black screen at my monitor:

Keyboard lights

5.) On the instance my computer would load, I would get a CPU high temperature error! at the booting screen:

CPU high temperature error

Note however, the temperature will ALWAYS be at 88 celsius it will never change whenever I look at the temperature reading after the error notification, but when there is no error, the temperature is at normal levels. I doubt it can always be at 88 celsius so it can possibly be a false positive. But I don't know. I checked my fans they are all running. I checked some of the capacitors of the hardwares, but they don't seem to have leaked or bulged out.

But I always bypass it whenever I go to the setup mode by pressing Exit/Advance Mode in the upper right corner of the image below, and press Discard changes and exit then my windows will load normally.
ASUS BIOS

6.) Eventually I continue to keep restarting my computer over and over whenever it freezes until these pop-out, and my computer is now totally unusable as of today:

1st Screen:
Screen1

2nd Screen:
Screen 2

Then I also get an overclocking failure error:
Overclocking failure

Then also this broken loading screen in windows:
Broken loading screen

7.) Windows tries to run automatic repair, but it then it automatically restarts, then after restarting, it will double restart.

8.) Whenever I press the power button or press the hard reset button, there is a 1-2 second delay before it resets contrary to how it normally works of instantly resetting. Also, shutting down the computer will by holding the power button will not work, because it will keep turning the computer on after a 2-5 second delay.

Things i've done:
1.) Uninstall the Bluestacks program
2.) Use CC Cleaner to clean things
3.) Use Malware Bytes to scan the computer for malware (none found)
4.) I have AVG antivirus but I didn't scan

  • This is very broad. Seems like you need to restart. Set things back to default. Ensure the CPU isn't over clocked, and has thermal paste and the fans are working etc

Boot error 0xc0000098 means: The Windows Boot Configuration Data file does not contain a valid OS entry.

In short, your Windows installation is dead, and maybe your disk is too.

If you don't have backups, I suggest you get a Linux Live CD/USB and save your data
to an external disk.

Then you can try a Startup Repair to correct the boot, although this might fail
if it cannot detect the existing Windows installation.
You need to create a boot USB that matches your installed Windows version,
then follow the instructions in the article:
How to Run a Startup Repair in Windows 10.

If you ever manage to boot Windows, your first act should be to check the
S.M.A.R.T. data of the disk using a tool such as the free
Speccy,
because the disk itself might be failing.

  • Thanks for the help. I'll try these steps out. Surprisingly after I blew off tons of dust from my fans and brushed off the motherboard and rams and all the other circuits it hasn't hanged since. I am guessing it can be overheating due to dust?

  • It can be overheating, or maybe caused by a defective sensor on the motherboard. It's not normal for the CPU to still be over-hot after a few minutes of inaction, so I reserve judgement. If you get it booting again, you could keep an eye on the temperature using a product such as Speedfan.

There are a few things you could try:

  1. Try starting Windows in safe mode with command prompt and do sfc /scannow and check if it tells you about any errors.

  2. Try resetting your motherboard's CMOS by either removing the battery directly, or by resetting it from the BIOS.

  3. Get a Windows 10 Live CD and then follow this guide to fix the Master Boot Record in case it has any issues

  4. Open up your PC and check for loose cooler cables or weird fan noises. You may have a malfunctioning fan that fails to cool your PC properly, hence the freezing or temperature warnings
