Laptop only boots from HD if a bootable windows 8 or higher installer usb is attached to it

0

I have an old Dell Latitude E5500 series laptop. It's primary hard drive bay/socket is dead. So I have my hard drive attached to it's DVD room via Caddy.

But I'm facing a problem. It's that if I boot my laptop normally without any bootable USB attached to it, it throws an error saying no hard drive / bootable media found. But if I attach a windows bootable installer USB to it, it boots from the hard drive and start the operating system.

I thought it to be a bootloader problem so I dual booted my windows 8.1 with Ubuntu hopping to fix the issue but it didn't work. I have to attach a windows bootable USB to make it go to Grub for OS selection else it will throw the same HD not found error.

Also it only works with Windows 8 or higher bootable USB. The Linux live USB does not make it to boot from hard drive.

Is there any possible explanation for it ?

  • have you checked your BIOS boot options?

  • Yes it's set to hard drive. But if i go to boot selection menu on boot, hard drive option is not displayed there.
