Host 2 Host serial over USB-c

-1

So I have an interesting thought experiment that I decided to look into.

Now that USB isn’t necessarily host -> slave, and power is at least a little smarter... The technical possibilities of host2host remote management over USB could be possible, so at this point it's just a software issue right?

I know it can't be the most useful idea I’m more curious if it can be done. has anyone else thought of this and maybe given it a try? I’m not seeing anything in google.

  • On the aside, I will be working at this on my own with a USB3(A) to USB-C setup as I'm able.

what do you mean by remote management exactly?

USB wasn't necessarily host->slave previously either; the official specification included a v3.0 host-host (typeA-type-A "debugging only") cable.

  • @grawity Actually, the concept existed even before USB 3.0. You could do the same thing with special EHCI chipsets and an appropriate cable as well (in fact, this is what the usb-debug driver in Linux was originally for, and the reason Microsoft Windows originally had support for USB debugging).

  • @Keltari I was thinking something along the lines of shell access such as TTY or COM service that could have a shell passed to it. Something along the lines of a serial cable without all the adapters.
